Lincoln Fire and Rescue battled a fire inside an apartment building near 17th and Sumner Wednesday afternoon. Crews arrived around 12:30 and found heavy smoke and flames.
LFR Captain Nancy Crist says the fire started in a garden-level apartment and spread to a deck on the floor above. All of the residents were able to to get themselves out prior to the arrival of firefighters.
Two cats were rescued and given oxygen by firefighters. The cats were turned over to animal control. Crist says the cause of the fire was electrical and it caused about $80,000 in damage.
