Thursday Storm Dumps Nine Inches of Snow on Lincoln

By Tom Stanton Feb 16, 2023 | 8:49 AM

A winter storm that rolled into Lincoln and Lancaster County on Thursday morning dumped several inches of snow and forced schools to close.  Throughout the early part of the day, reports of more than eight inches of snow were coming from numerous locations across the city.  The storm made the morning commute extremely difficult, and the heavy snow forced schools across the city to close and city officials to issue a snow emergency.

Becky Kern is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Omaha and said the “incredible” snow fall rates were higher than originally predicted. “Anywhere from an inch and a half to a little more than that per hour,” said Kern. “So, as your listeners have seen, it’s accumulated very rapidly.”

By 10 AM, the heaviest snow had begun to move east of Lincoln. Kern estimated that Lincoln may have ended up with nine inches of snow in total.
