Snickers is bringing back their Rockin’ Nut Road version of the candy bar. It’s basically the same except it’s dark chocolate. They quit selling it in 2017, but fans have been loud enough that Snickers is bringing it back. Normally I’d love this because I love dark chocolate. Or, I did until Jenny told be about how much bad stuff has been recently found in dark chocolate.
A couple months ago, Consumer Reports found unsafe levels of cadmium and lead in multiple dark chocolate candy bars. Cadmium can damage your lungs, kidneys, immune system, nervous system, reproductive system, and bones. Lead does a whole lot more, especially to kids, including brain damage. 23 of the candy bars in the study had dangerous amounts in just one ounce of chocolate. The worst offenders were candy bars from Trader Joes, Lily’s, Green and Blacks, and Theos. Godiva, Lindt, and even Hershey’s had bars high in lead. Lindt and Dove had dark chocolates high in cadmium.
Ghirardelli is the one more recognized name with chocolate in the “Safer Choices” category. And by “safer”, they mean they still have 33 to 70 percent of what a body can handle daily.
A lot of the cadmium is being taken into the plants from soil. A lot of the lead comes where they store the beans and how they’re handled.
Maybe you could enjoy Peeps flavored Pepsi instead. I haven’t heard anything about that being able to kill you.
