A couple of weeks ago, a woman emerged from a cave in Spain that she’d lived in for 500 days. Betariz is her name. She lived in this dark cave for almost 2 years as part of an experiment. Scientists sent her in there to learn more about the human circadian rhythm and how our minds would react to being subjected to something like that. And by something like that, I mean it was 230 feet below ground and mostly dark all the time. She did have a couple of small lights and small cooking tools. And I think she was allowed to wander around underground a bit. She also did some sewing and reading. There were plenty of people around, watching over her, but she didn’t have any contact with them. Nor did she have any contact with the outside world. I don’t think she did any washing down there either. No bath or shower for 500 days. I wonder if she were allowed to brush her teeth.
Beatriz said time didn’t exist for her. It was always 4 in the morning.
