Beginning Tuesday, August 8, North 48th Street from Leighton to Madison avenues will close for the second and final phase of a water main project. The water main work is scheduled to be completed by late fall 2023, with the paving project continuing into early winter 2023.
The recommended detour is Leighton Avenue to North 56th Street to Adams Street or Fremont Street. StarTran Routes 48-North 48th and 49-University Place will continue to be detoured during this work. The closure is in coordination with the Lincoln on the Move North 48th Street from Leighton Avenue to Superior Street improvement project.
Phase two of the water main project will continue lining the existing six-inch water main along North 48th Street from Leighton Avenue to Gladstone Street. Additional water main replacement needed along Leighton Avenue from North 48th to North 49th streets will be completed as part of this project.
Ongoing paving work includes:
- New paving and sidewalks on North 48th Street from Greenwood Street to Madison Avenue
- Mill and overlay of the existing asphalt from Greenwood to Hartley streets
- Installation of the new traffic signal at the 48th Street and Cornhusker Highway intersection
Substantially completed work includes:
- Paving improvements on North 48th Street from Fremont to Superior streets are open to the public
- Watermain replacement on North 48th Street from Greenwood Street to Madison Avenue
Lincoln on the Move is investing in improvements on North 48th Street from Leighton Avenue to Superior Street. These improvements will include a mill and overlay of the existing asphalt surface and concrete panel replacement where required. Additional work with other funding sources will include reconstruction of the traffic signal at the intersection of North 48th Street and Cornhusker Highway, installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon at North 48th Street and Huntington Avenue, and upgrades to the existing sidewalk ramps to comply with federal and local standards.
