UPDATE: DHHS Case Worker Shot **** Lincoln Police Investigating Shooting Near 7th and Y Street

A 28-year-old case worker for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services was shot Tuesday afternoon near North 7th and Y Street.

A Lincoln Police news release reports 2 case workers were responding for a child welfare check. The two were on the grass in front of the home when the suspect, 38-year-old Brent Lopez, came outside and fired multiple rounds from a handgun.

The case worker was shot in the leg and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Lopez is charged with assault on an officer and use of a firearm to commit a felony. Three children were interviewed at the BraveBe Child Advocacy Center and will be cared for at a safe location.

TUESDAY AFTERNOON:

The Lincoln Police Department is investigating a Tuesday afternoon shooting in the north bottoms neighborhood.

Public Information Officer Erika Thomas tells KLIN News that around 4 p.m., officers responded to the area of 7th and Y Street on a report of someone being shot.

At this time, it is known that one person was shot with at least one gunshot wound to the leg. Injuries are expected to be non life-threatening.

One person of interest has been detained at this time.
