You’ve heard of snakes on a plane. How about a horse on the concourse. Actually, it’s a horse on a passenger flight. Some genius thought it’d be cool to have a live horse on a 10 hour international flight, New York to Belgium. You know who didn’t think it was cool? The horse. Ten minutes in to the flight, it escaped where they were keeping it. Now, it wasn’t like it was running up and down the aisles, knocking over trays and such. But, because they can’t secure a horse during a flight, they had to turn around and head back to New York.
Also, because they had to turn around, they ended up having to dump 20 tons of fuel over the ocean.
And because I’m a nerd, I did the math. 20 tons is 40k pounds. A gallon weighs 6 pounds. That 6,667 gallons or about $18k.
I found a video on how they put horses on 747s for travel. They have these small, pop up stables in the cargo area. They even have their own attendant. The guy on the video says it’s really smelly. So, if you get your luggage after a flight and it reeks, it was probably near the horses. You can see the horse on the plane at the 11:20 mark of the video.
