Road charges EVs as they drive over it. It literally sends electricity to the batteries.

There’s a new road in Detroit that will charge your electric vehicle as you drive over it. Not every electric vehicle, but any that have receivers in them. You see, underneath the road are inductive charging coils. As you drive over them, they send a charge to the receiver in the vehicle.

Now all we need are 800 million more miles of this and all of our gas problems will be solved!

Sarcasm aside, I actually think this is pretty cool. What I don’t understand is where the coils get the electricity to begin with. After looking up how inductive coils work, it’s my understanding that they have to be charged to begin with. Is the city providing it? Someone would have to pay for it, wouldn’t they? If I’m wrong, someone set me right.

By the way, Electreon, the company who developed these roads, is also setting them up in 8 other countries.
