Containers made out of crabs instead of plastic.

How would you feel about drinking water out of a bottle made from crab shells? Keep in mind that they plastic bottles you’re already using are made with oil, which is really old dead dinosaurs. So, I’m not seeing a problem.

Researchers have found a way get an organic polymer out of crustacean shells which could be used in making biodegradable packaging instead of plastic. That polymer is chitin which is the one of the most abundant organic polymers in the world.

There are around 9 million tons of lobster, crab, and shrimp shells that are tossed every year. So, instead, you might be able to save up all those really smelly pieces of chitin to help save the environment. Maybe keep it out in the garage until you’ve got a couple lawn bags full of the stuff. Maybe we could turn it in like aluminum cans and make a few bucks off of it.

The researchers are also looking into whether or not, chitin can be used as a fertilizer for crops. I sure hope it leads to corn that taste like crab legs. Actually, kale could use some flavoring. I’d start eating it if it were shrimp flavored.
