Have you eaten Fried Saltines? Someone told me the other day that one of the appetizers at their holiday party was going to be Fried Saltines.
That sounds terribly bland to me. They’re not snack crackers. They taste like salt on dry bread crusts. They’re already crispy. I asked Brooke and Jill. They’ve never had Fried Saltines either. All 3 of us wondered out loud, “Why?” Why add a bunch of grease to a pretty much tasteless cracker?
After a deep dive into recipes all over the internet, Fried Saltines appear to be more than the name implies. A lot of people add seasonings like chili powder, parmesan, garlic powder, and many others. I kind of get that, but then the frugal chef in me comes out and says, Triscuits, Wheat Thins, Cheez-Its, and so many other companies already do the work and are probably cheaper in the long run. Saltines ain’t cheap anymore.
That said, I’ll probably try to make some just to see what happens. If you’d like to give it a go, here’s Alton Brown showing an easy way to make some.
