A Chicago man who stabbed an LPD officer in the neck during a struggle at a north Lincoln bus depot a year ago is headed to prison. 28-year-old Simon Kafka was sentenced to 30-45 years in prison Friday morning.
On October 17, 2023, LPD was called to the bus depot near 52nd and Superior Street around 12:15 a.m. when Kafka refused to get off the bus and had no ticket. Police Chief Michon Morrow says when officers encountered Kafka in the back of the bus, he began fighting with the officers and lunged at officer Kirby Urbanek with a knife and stabbed him in the neck.
Morrow say Kafka then tried to grab the officer’s gun and was shot once by the second officer. As part of a plea deal, the judge dismissed two other charges, attempted second-degree murder and resisting arrest using a deadly weapon.
