This morning we talked about a new system to help you pick up around the house. Here’s so more detail.
Imagine your home on its messiest day. Legos strewn across the floor, dirty socks wedged between couch cushions, and cups crusted over with milk. Overwhelming, right? KC Davis, a licensed therapist and author of “How to Keep House While Drowning,” shares a simple yet effective method to tackle this chaos: the Five Things Tidying Method.
The Five Things Tidying Method
1. Collect Trash Start by gathering all the trash in the room. Use a trash bag or can, but don’t take it out yet. The goal is to make the space livable and functional without getting distracted.
2. Pile Up Dirty Dishes Next, gather all the dirty dishes. You can use a laundry basket or a small rolling hamper to collect them. Don’t wash them yet; just get them out of the way.
3. Pick Up Clothing and Laundry Collect all the laundry lying around. Whether it’s clean or dirty, put it in a hamper or bag. This step is about triage, so don’t get stuck sorting.
4. Put Back Things That Have a Place Return items to their designated spots. If something belongs in another part of the house, set it aside for now.
5. Gather Things That Don’t Have a Place Finally, collect items that don’t have a designated spot. Consider creating a “junk drawer” or using clear shoe holders to organize these odds and ends.
Once you’ve gone through these five steps, take out the trash, do the dishes, and start the laundry. Then, enjoy your newly organized space!
