When I say “Nuclear Reactor”, the first thing that comes to mind is stuffy British auto maker Rolls Royce, right? And the next obvious thing would be “the moon”. It makes as much sense as putting kangaroos, computer chips, and Alaska altogether. And who hasn’t done that?
Believe it or not, the United Kingdom Space Agency has hired Rolls-Royce to create a nuclear reactor to put on the moon to use as a power source for astronauts and colonies. It’s not going to be a regular reactor, rather a mini reactor and the auto company will be teaming up with multiple universities to make it happen.
Aren’t there already mini reactors in military submarines? Yes. Apparently Rolls-Royce has been building them for the British Navy for 60 years. There’s some trivia to impress friends with. They’re also talking about making nuclear engines for space craft that could get people to other planets faster. They think one could get us to Mars in 3 months instead of the 7 months it would take now.
I heard that people that make Cameros were working on a mini reactor that runs on Mountain Dew. There was a problem though. They couldn’t make space suit helmets that fit mullets.
