Did I commit sushi sacrilege? Austin’s “so crazy it just might work” homemade sushi adventure.

I created an unconventional sushi roll using canned tuna instead of raw. Years ago, as I was enjoying a spicy tuna roll, I started wondering what canned tuna would taste like in a roll. While grocery shopping Saturday, I accidentally came across a package of Nori, the wrapping around sushi, and realized it was a sign.

Two hours later, I was sipping draft sake and prep to make sushi…………….. which I had never done before. But, I watched a couple of conflicting and confusing Youtube videos, while sipping more sake, and felt confident about it. I wanted spicy tuna. After testing various hot sauces and spices, Jenny and I settled on mixing the canned tuna with Cajun seasonings. Add in cream cheese, carrots, cucumbers, and an avocado, and it was easy as rolling everything up and cutting pieces.

It wasn’t awesome. Nor was it terrible. I made two rolls and we ate them both. I think some mayonnaise mixed with seasonings and the tuna would have helped. We tried various sauces to dip it in. The best was Arby’s Horsey Sauce.

I still have Nori left. I think I might try making one of those “Nebraska” rolls I see on menus with the cooked hamburger in it. Maybe I’ll serve it with Easter dinner next Sunday.
