First, did you know the Oscar Myer Wienermobile has been around for nearly a century? Second, they’re changing the name to the Frankmobile. The people driving it around will now be known as Frankmobile Frankfurters. They used to be called Hotdoggers. It’s the first time the vehicle’s name has ever been changed. In a statement Kraft Foods said, “This summer, it’s time to highlight another fan-favorite: our delicious 100% Beef Franks.” I’m pretty sure that this is a promotional stunt because they were asked if the changes are permanent and they replied that they trying to see if the changes cut the mustard with fans.
Back to the history. I honestly thought the Wienermobiles popped up in the 80s. They’ve been around since 1936. They didn’t drive it around during World War 2 because of gas rationing. They were retired in 1977 in favor of TV and radio advertising. But, they were brought back in 1986 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Wienermobile. Also, there’s a mini Wienermobile now. It’s built on a Mini Copper chassis, but it’s still 15 feet long and 8 feet high.
