Woman may have a better chance of avoiding dementia if they get extra vitamin D. A study worked with thousands of women with an average age of 71. One group took vitamin D supplements. After 10 years, the study found that the Vitamin D group had 40% fewer dementia diagnoses than the rest of the women. They tested men too, and it seemed effective for them, but the results were better for women. Previous studies had shown that insufficient levels of Vitamin D were linked to higher dementia risk. Vitamin D may help protect the brain against the buildup of a protein that is linked to dementia.
