OMG. A Philadelphia high school principal denied a 17 year girl her diploma because the gal did a little dance of joy on her way to the stage. It literally lasted 4 seconds and looked more like she she was playfully skipping. Then the crowd had a little 2 second laugh. Nothing was disturbed or was unruly. When the girl, Hafsah Abdur-Rahman, got to the stage and put her hand out for the diploma, the principal physically moved Hafsah’s hand away and told her that she couldn’t have it because the crowd laughed.
She was able to pick up the diploma later but why ruin her moment in front of friends and family like that? Oh no, she was happy to have achieved an educational milestone. The pillars of society are going to crumble now!!!!
For whatever reason, the school had told students and families that the couldn’t cheer or clap when they were on stage which I don’t understand. I can’t imagine what that stick in the mud school would have done at my high school graduation………. Where, there were rumors that I and a friend may or may not have had something to do with a bunch of fireworks and illegal pop bottle rockets that were attached to a timer and went off while we were walking across the stage.
The Philly school district released a statement saying that they do not condone withholding diplomas based on family members cheering. They also apologized.
