The Cost Of Cutting – How much do kids get for mowing lawns these days?

By Austin Michael Jun 7, 2021 | 8:12 PM

What’s a fair price to pay for mowing a lawn these days? I checked Facebook market place and $25 a small lawn seems to be the average.

I bring it up because I heard a kid talking about mowing lawns to save up enough money to buy his first car. And I wondered how many lawns that would take.  The average price of a used sedan is between $25,000 and $26,000. An SUV is $34, 457.  According to Car and Driver magazine, used car prices are up 30% from this time last year, 17% since January.

Anyway, let’s say it’s $25,000. At $25 a lawn, he has to mow 1,000 lawns. Taking it a step further, let’s say he’s got 180 good days to mow lawns this summer. He has to mow 5 and a half lawns every one of those days. Which actually, isn’t as bad as I thought it’d be.

I could always factor in the price of gas as an overhead expense, but I won’t. My dad always bought gas for the mower I used when I was kid mowing lawns.

Here’s my car price source at Car and Driver.
