Want to give yourself a fright in Lincoln for Halloween? There’s a haunted spot along a bike trail. I’m talking about a place where 11 people were murdered at the same time and their whispers still linger in the trees. Just past where the Rock Island and Jamaica North trail cross is the spot of a terrible train crash that killed 11 people in 1894. The train was crossing on a bridge above Salt Creek. A man named George Washington Davis had sabotaged the tracks by removing some of the spikes. The train dropped 40 feet and caught fire. People have reported hearing whispering sounds at dusk there. Others say they’ve heard heavy footsteps behind them but no one is there when they turn around. It’s not hard to find the spot. There’s a large plaque marker that describes the disaster on the trail.
