Pylons and road work signs, which had blocked traffic throughout the University Place Neighborhood since the spring of this year, are now yielding to North 48th Street traffic.
Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) announced Friday, the northbound lanes and a southbound lane of North 48th Street between Leighton and Huntington avenues are now open. Additionally, the North 48th Water Main Replacement Improvement Project from Leighton Avenue to Gladstone Street, and University Place Neighborhood Improvement Project are nearly complete, and some utility and cleanup work remains to be completed.
While this section opens up, LTU is advising drivers of a temporary closure scheduled for the end of the month.
Beginning Monday, November 27, the southbound lanes of North 48th Street from Huntington to Leighton avenues are scheduled to close for one week to complete Windstream utility work. One lane or more of traffic is anticipated to open once the work is completed.
As previously announced by LTU, Beginning in spring 2024, the North 48th Street Improvement Project will conduct mill and overlay work of the existing asphalt surface and concrete base repairs from Leighton to Madison avenues. The work is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete. One lane or more of traffic in each direction is anticipated to remain open through the project.
The temporary pause in road work comes after the closure of a University Place boutique, purportedly unable to withstand a business downturn influenced by the project.
