Friday Feel Good Feature – Boy Scouts Save Drowning Woman

By Austin Michael Jul 2, 2021 | 8:12 PM

Tonight’s inspiring story caught my attention because I was a Boy Scout. It’s about Joseph Diener and Dominic Viet, both scouts in Missouri. Last Friday, they were out exploring, as Boy Scouts often do, and doing their civic duty by checking on damage caused by recent flooding in their town of Columbia. Then they heard a cry for help.

That’s when the “To help other people at all times” of the scout motto kicked in.

A woman was clinging for dear life to a basketball hoop. It was in a park that was flooded and the water came up almost entirely to the rim.

Dominic told the Today Show, “We can swim. We were trained for this.”

Indeed. There’s a Swimming merit badge that requires survival and rescue techniques for situations just like this.

So the boys swam out to her, had her hold their shoulders, and they got her to safety.

And because of their heroics, they might receive honorary Lifeguard activity badges.

By the way, they’re both Life Scouts, just one rank under Eagle, the highest level before becoming Eagle Scouts.
