I waaaaaas willing to ride in an autonomous driving car. That was before one ran into a wall. Not just any wall. It’s literally a wall painted on a screen like Wile E Coyote would put on a road to try and fool the Road Runner.
Mark Rober, an engineer with over 65 million viewers on his You Tube channel, wanted to see what a Tesla would do if he put a screen on the road, a screen painted to look just like the road behind it.
The problem he was trying to highlight appears to be that some Tesla cars utilize an all camera set up and others use LIDAR which uses lasers for obstacle detection.
The Tesla with all cameras did hit full brakes before hitting a mannequin kid. LIDAR mowed the mannequin down. The LIDAR also seemed to have issues if a moisture mist, like a fog, was on the road.
Then there was the fake wall. The LIDAR passed, but the all camera system didn’t brake at all, going straight through like the coyote on an ACME missile.
