I was just remembering how the grade school I went to (Westmoor in Scottsbluff) used to have a Halloween party for all the families every year. The school would have booths throughout the building where kids could play games to “win” candy. There was one where you would cast the line of a fake fishing pole over a wall and it’d come back with candy attached. There was a musical chairs thing on the stage in the cafeteria where you could win cakes and brownies. And there was also a booth to bob for apples.
It hit me that I have not seen anyone actually bob for apples since then. Does anyone do it anymore?
Fun fact about bobbing for apples. It’s been around since Roman times. Back in those days, apples would either be placed in water or hung from strings. Young, unmarried people would try to bite the apples. The first one to succeed was thought to be the next person to get married. Some areas in the British Isles believed that if a young woman took the apple she bit into home and then placed it under her pillow, she would dream about the man she was going to marry.
Who still bobs for apples? Fun video of kids trying it out in blog.
