Tik Tok is trying to be kinder and gentler. They’re testing a new ‘Dislike” button. It’ll look like a thumbs down. The idea is that it’ll help identify inappropriate content. In their blog Wednesday, Tik Tok wrote, “”We’ve started testing a way to let individuals identify comments they believe to be irrelevant or inappropriate. This community feedback will add to the range of factors we already use to help keep the comment section consistently relevant and a place for genuine engagement.”
One thought I had about this was that it could lead to bullying or people piling on. To help keep that from happening, the number of dislikes will remain hidden. As they put it, to “avoid creating ill-feeling between community members or demoralize creators.” Someone should create a “meh” button for social media. It expresses a lack of enthusiasm for a post, but it’s not really hurtful. It could come with a picture of shoulders shrugging.
You might not see the “Dislike” button right away. They’ll be rolling it out over the next few months around the world.
