I’ve known since the 7th grade that I wanted to work in radio. I’ve told the story many times, and it may even be in my bio. But I also really wanted to do play-by-play for the Atlanta Braves. Did some of that have to do with the fact that I was in love with Chipper Jones. Yup. I also just loved (and still do) baseball and broadcasting and thought it would be a really cool job. At that time Robin Roberts was on ESPN, but that was about it. She was probably the most prominent woman at that time in sports media, off the top of my head. Now I can name Hannah Storm, Doris Burke, Holly Rowe, Jessica Mendoza, plus Jen Schroeder. Last year history was made with the first all-female broadcast for Major League Baseball. Plus, we’re now getting broadcasts, not only of college softball, but with women in the booth.
This last Sunday, CBS Sunday Morning did a wonderful story on a young girl who wants to work in baseball play-by-play when she grows up, and she looks up to Melanie Newman, who calls games for the Baltimore Orioles. Check it out!
Eleven-year-old Ellee Dowdy, from Amherst, Virginia, eats, sleeps and talks baseball. But she didn’t know girls could pursue a broadcasting career doing play-by-play until she listened to a Baltimore Orioles game called by announcer Melanie Newman https://t.co/McPTJMJelS pic.twitter.com/piyA944vMf
