Save water by getting your plants drunk.

By Austin Michael Sep 16, 2022 | 6:51 PM

Your plants can go longer without water. You just need to get them drunk. Farmers. Start filling your pivots with some Old Natural. Seriously, scientists made sure the soil around plants was soaked in ethanol alcohols. The plants were still growing even after two weeks without water.

If you’re like me, you’re wondering if it was scientists or a bunch of frat boys who came up with this idea. It was scientists from Japan. You see, plants make ethanol when they’re not getting a lot of water. So, they thought, “I bet if we add more ethanol they plants will need even less water”. From there, the explanation gets down to genetic information that’s too long and above my pay grade. Just know that 75% of wheat and rice plants soaked in ethanol survived for 2 weeks without water, whereas only 5% of the sober plants did. The only drawback is that most of the ethanol soaked plants kept trying to call ex-girlfriends at 2 in the morning.

Also, how would that work in Nebraska………. We soak corn in ethanol in order to make sure corn survives so that we can make….ethanol???
